National Vegetarian Week 2009 Report
Our National Vegetarian Week publicity started as normal at the Leighton Buzzard May Day Fayre, 4 May with a market stall in the High Street. With a large presence of children and families it is a great opportunity to distribute a lot of child-friendly literature. The weather as usually was unfriendly, windy, showery and cool. Apart from being on the cool side of the High Street, we were in a busy location with lots of people passing on both sides and near the fairground rides so quite noisy.
On 16 May we already had a Street Collection booked for Animal Aid in Buckingham town centre but it was an opportunity to focus more on the vegetarian theme and distribute the booklets and recipes to passing shoppers.
On 20 May, we set-up a stall in the afternoon at our normal busy location in Bletchley centre outside the former Co-op home store. Shoppers were generally interested and it was noticeable the number of vegans who approached the stalls.
On 23 May we had another Street Collection for Animal Aid in Stony Stratford High Street, Milton Keynes so again decided on the theme of vegetarianism with two butchers shops across the road on either side. The response again was very positive and we ran out of the NVW materials before the end of the collection. Even a young butcher took a leaflet as he happened to be passing by.
